Wow, what a busy day! It's 12.30am now and I've still go a couple of hours work I wish to get done getting cards into the store before I go to bed. The Final Fantasy first lot of spoilers have dropped, and while I have thoughts and feelings on it, that's not what I'm discussing today.
I have good news and bad news. The good news is we have dates for the next big Dunedin Modern/Legacy (+ also Premodern event). The bad news is it's looking likely that I won't be attending the Invercargill Undy Hundy. I'll start with explaining the bad news first because the event is closer, but information will be further down the page for those wanting to know about the Dunedin Event.
So, Undy Hundy. First, I am still donating some prizes to the event. And I will probably have a special code unique to the event for those who make it. As to why I'm not attending, David and I don't have transport. The transport we thought we had can't help us, and flying will double the cost of the event :(. If we flew down, we'd probably need to have people trade into the store $4k worth of cards before we start making any profit. From all I've heard, the Invercargill magic scene is diminishing, with a bunch of players holding onto their collections, but playing very casually and not cracking product or buying a lot of singles, leading to collection rotation.
I'd love to hear that I'm wrong on that, but with that information, it's looking like the profit margins aren't going to match flights, as much as I'd love to see you all. Realistically, 1 of 2 things would need to happen for it to become financially viable for us. 1 ) Someone is able to help us with a drive down to and back from Invercargill for the event. 2 ) I have people contacting me ahead of time about stock that they were thinking about trading into us, and that comes to at least 4-5K total, so I know that at the very least, we'll be able to break even.
With that out of the way, Dunedin event. All events at Dunedin Card Merchant. The owner and the staff have always been amazing to me there, so I will continue to support them by having events there as long as I can. The event is from Friday 18th of July to Sunday 20th of July.
If Modern and Legacy continue to be how they've been at previous events, they'll run on 1pm Saturday for Modern, and 1pm Sunday for Legacy at $25 entry. I will be putting up a cash prize for first place for both of these events, hopefully $200 for each event if we can reach 24 players. The cash prize is out of my own pocket, and the $25 entry per person is not a part of that, so there should be plenty of store credit for prizes as well.
On Friday, we are trying out a Premodern event to see what interest there is in it. $20 entry fee, First place is a lightly played Deranged Hermit, Second place is a heavily played gold-border survival of the fittest, and there will be prizes for the rest of top 8. Also, every entry will get a Promo Pack and a random Mercadian Masques basic land.
I'm looking forward to this event as premodern seems to have a number of dedicated players from both Dunedin and Christchurch, and having both groups meeting to play in this event will be an exciting time.
Some premodern events have allowed proxies, but for this event, no proxies are allowed. You are allowed to use gold-boarded cards though. If you are unfamiliar with Premodern and with to know more here's a great starting point https://premodernmagic.com/blog/premodern-the-movie/
Right that's me, it's now 1am, and there's still work to do, so I'll see you all next time and hopefully get to discuss some Final Fantasy.
