Your Bi-Weekly Update with Willis 22-08-2022

Sometimes I am reminded just how bad for my fitness it is to running a business completely out of home. It's not that I don't feel I can do exercise, it's that when I do I feel it for longer than is reasonable. For example, this week I did a 20min walk when the bus was delayed, and felt it in my calves for the next 3-4 days :P.

Before anyone gives unsolicited advice, I have found 2 things that really get in my way. 1 is that exercise for the sake of exercise is something I find incredibly challenging. Going for full day walks in foreign places, easy. Walking around the block each day not so much. The biggest issue though is that I enjoy playing sport from time to time, like Tennis, though as much as I love it, Tennis for me is connecting racket to ball more than it is an actual game, hand eye co-ordination has never been great.....

But back to the point. I've always been the person to organize gatherings in my social group, and it turns out that when work becomes stressful and busy enough that I'm in no space to organize something, no-one else in my Tennis group or other social groups will pick up the slack and organize things instead.

Anyways, that's my week in exercise, but there's 2 business things I was planning to talk about instead.

Firstly, Dominaria is here and I am super excited, though I'd love to know how people newer to the game than I am feel about it. It very much feels like Time Spiral 2.0. Nearly every single card has refences to characters in the game between 1993 and 2002. I can't get enough, all that nostalgia makes me super happy. On the other hand, that's what made Time Spiral so Divisive. People who loved nostalgia loved the set, those who didn't get it really didn't like the set as much. It's something Maro has mentioned before as a design lesson. So I'm interested in seeing how Dominaria United treats that differently.

The second thing is less happy. NZ Post are putting their prices up, and that means we will too. As of the 1st of October all shipping costs will be going up 70cents, and rural packages will be going up an extra 80cents.

I hate it, you hate it, but it has to be done. We have always charged you exactly what it costs us to ship cards with Toploaders because that's something that is a constant cost no matter how well or poorly the business is doing. And that's something we don't want to move on.

There are still a ton of cards we've picked up that aren't in the store yet. Part of that is because David has taken a break for a week and it's just me, and part of it is just because any work outside of covering him that I do should be time spent catching up on dreaded taxes :P.

Ah! I remembered the other very important thing I wanted to talk about. You may have seen we've removed unlisted commons and uncommons from the website. Between the amount of boxes and effort pulling them on and off shelves, we are trying to move away from that.

Someone sends in a list for 10 cards, it takes 30mins to dig through all the boxes and find them, it turns out we only have 6 cards, we sell those cards for $3 and I've paid my employee $15 digging them out. That enough of a loss margin that we don't want to be doing it super often.

There are 2 things we will be doing instead.

Firstly, and this only works if you are in Christchurch. We have had a deal for a while that if you come to us and do the looking through our boxes instead of getting us to do so we charge half price on our commons and uncommons. We encourage more of you looking for commons and uncommons locally to take advantage of this please.

Secondly we will be going through those boxes more regularly checking for in demand cards and especially Pauper cards. For those of you interested in Pauper those boxes haven't had any Pauper cards pulled out of them yet, so you have lots more to look forward to.

We can still find commons and uncommons if you've been looking for them and can't find them anywhere. We are just hoping for less requests in general please.

Anyways, with that remembered that's me out for this week. Will see you all next week :).
