Your Bi-Weekly Update with Willis 13/01/2025

So quick survey for me please, how many of you think David and I are in a romantic relationship and not just a business one. Because even though it's really none of anyone's business, it is a mistake I see assumed often enough that I feel the need to put it in a blog post. I'm gay, and David and I are long time friends who work really well together as business partners.

Welcome to 2025, as you are reading this I am back home, there was a miscommunication with the parents about how long I was staying for, but in all honesty I've been anxious to get back into work so I'm actually happy to be home so much earlier than expected.

I learned while I was away that I am really really bad at math, like really bad, and anytime over the last 4 years or so that the business has paid extra in cash for a reserved list card (like a dual land) and then traded it away we've been losing money, if not directly then at least in the time taken to process the work... It's honestly pretty embarrassing to admit, but I haven't been converting between cash and store credit when calculating profit... super awkward... An example of this is paying $500 cash on a card and trading it away for $700. If I convert that $700 back into cash it comes to $518.51. Meaning that if I'd paid cash for the second lot of cards and ignored the $500 card I would be down $18.51. $18.51 is not enough profit for the time David and I spend working on a deal we are paying $500 cash on. Not even close...

So if you see high value reserved list cards on the website selling for a higher price than you might expect, that's what's going on there. I can probably offer a small discount for anyone paying 100% in cash, but the sad truth is that if I don't have it that high, I'm losing money :(.

That said, I still want to continue investing in legacy/commander reserved list staples, and then being able to get them into the hands of players who might not be able to afford to pay cash on them. It's part of my business that I really enjoy. So I've increased our buy price of those cards fairly aggressively, but in exchange, I'll have to be a lot less flexible when it comes to paying any higher than our buy price for those cards.

A nice pile of cards I picked up while I was away went into the store Friday, so enjoy all of those :)
