Your Bi-Weekly Update with Willis 27-02-2023

Hi All,

No article last week as I was in Dunedin, it was a great trip that kept us super busy, and you'll have seen a bunch of new cards in stock, but that's not really what I want to talk about today.

In the last couple of weeks I have been hit hard by depression. Very hard, leaving me feeling very unmotivated. My business mentor always used to tell me that my business is succeeding most when I'm having fun, and right now with the circle of constant grading, pricing, putting cards away, repeat, I'm finding everything very monotonous and tedious.

This of course means something needs to change, and while I'm not 100% sure what that is yet, there is going to be some experimentation while I figure that out and I thought I'd share with you some of my thoughts.

My personal goal has never been to have everything always in stock and constantly up to date with the latest cards. Both Calico Keep and Shuffle and Cut do a wonderful job of that already. For me I've wanted to spend more time travelling, picking up old collections, and bring in more of the cards I find cool for players who want them. Reserved List Cards, Duals, higher end EDH and Legacy cards like Mishra's Workshop, Tabernacle, and Timetwister. Alpha/Beta/ and Old School cards for those who like playing those formats. There are not a ton of Old School players with the most powerful cards in NZ, especially outside of Auckland, but there is an increasing amount of players who are interested in playing Old School without Power.

As a lot of you will be well aware, there's a lot of new sets releasing all of the time and we just can't keep up. We will still be making sure we have stock on launch for all standard sets, and then maybe 1 or 2 other sets per year. If our goal is to be purchasing more collections, and bringing more powerful/rarer cards into the store, buying boxes of every single set is very counterintuitive towards that goal.

I know that some of what I want to pick up is not what some of you (our wonderful customers) are looking for, and we are not going to change so drastically that you'll lose all you've come to love here, it's just for me personally, I need to move in a direction that has me enjoying life a lot more than I am right now.

Thank you all for reading and your continued support,

- Rose Willis
